Cardinal Jean-Paul Vesco of Algiers has responded to Bishop Robert Barron’s correction of his statement that the Catholic Church is “not there to convert” people. Instead of withdrawing his statement, Cardinal Vesco reaffirmed his position. In a Facebook post on October 30, Vesco admitted that “the Church that gives life to me is the Church of Saint John Paul II and the interreligious declaration of Assisi (1986)". The Cardinal believes in "the Church of Pope Francis, with the Abu Dhabi Declaration on Human Fraternity, signed with the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar on February 4, 2019; and the Church of Pope Leo, with his visit to Algeria and his silent prayer at the Great Mosque of Algiers, shoulder to shoulder with the rector." A court in Tarnów has convicted Bishop Andrzej Jeż of failing to promptly report abuse by two priests, the first such criminal case against a Polish bishop. The diocese will appeal.

Bishop Andrzej Jeż has announced that he will appeal the verdict. Today, October 29, a court in Tarnów convicted Bishop Jeż, 63, of failing to promptly report allegations of child homosexual abuse involving two priests in his diocese. It is the first conviction of a serving Catholic bishop in Poland for such an offense. The court sentenced Bishop Jeż to two years of restricted liberty, requiring him to surrender 25% of his monthly salary to a foundation supporting abused children.
