SAINT IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA - July 31 Priest (1491-1556) St. Ignatius was born in Loyola, Spain. He was a courtier and a soldier until an injury forced his retirement at age 30. While recuperating, he experienced metanoia. A book he was reading encouraged him to place himself amidst the scenes of the Gospel during prayer. With charity for God and zeal for souls, Ignatius vowed to evangelize the Holy Land together with Peter Faver and Francis Xavier. However, war broke out and prevented them from leaving. The group turned to the vicar of Jesus Christ and received approved for their order: the Society of Jesus. The Jesuits' vows of poverty, chastity and obedience to the pope made them effective clerical reformers during the Counter-Reformation.
