The priest behind the infamous “Eucharist at sea” has been appointed head of University Pastoral Ministry for the Archdiocese of Milan for the next five years. In July 2022, Don Mattia Bernasconi celebrated a Novus Ordo Mass waist-deep in the sea off Crotone, using an inflatable mattress as an “altar.” Since September 1, he has overseen the Archdiocese’s pastoral work with university students, while continuing as chaplain at Humanitas University, a position he has held since 2023.

A 900-Year-Old French Abbey Is Up for Sale for Just €2 Million An abbey with almost 900 years of history is up for sale in France for around two million euros. Notre-Dame de Langonnet in Brittany was founded in 1136. The estate includes around 5,380 square meters of buildings, set within nearly 58 hectares of woodland, meadows and agricultural land. For centuries, Cistercian monks prayed here and shaped the area around the monastery. After the horrors of the French Revolution, the Spiritans - the congregation whose later superior general was Monsignor Marcel Lefebvre - made Langonnet their home in the 19th century. They remained for nearly 170 years. Generations of missionaries passed through the abbey before leaving for Africa and other parts of the world. Now that chapter is coming to an end. The last Spiritans are leaving, including elderly members of the order who had spent their retirement at Langonnet. A historic former monastery in Germany is being converted into rental apartments. The Diocese of Osnabrück has sold the Kommende Lage in Rieste, Lower Saxony, because it could no longer afford the renovations needed for the centuries-old building. Kommende Lage is a former monastery complex dating to the 13th century. The buyer, who runs a tree nursery in nearby Bersenbrück, takes ownership January 15 and plans to renovate it for housing. The purchase price was not disclosed. The site’s nearly 800-year-old Catholic pilgrimage tradition will continue: the pilgrimage church and rectory were not sold, and a priest will remain to oversee the pilgrimage.

Emma Bonino has died at 78. For decades, she was one of Italy’s most prominent Radical politicians. She was a leading campaigner for abortion, euthanasia, drug legalization, and more secular causes. Although she was not a medical professional, Bonino, according to her own testimony, performed over 10,000 illegal abortions. She is one of the most sinister figures in the history of Italy. Bonino nevertheless praised Francis, who maintained a warm personal relationship with her and personally visited her in 2024, bringing her flowers and chocolates.
Emma Bonino has died aged 78. May God have mercy on her soul. She was one of the most consequential figures in modern Italian politics, and Catholics should be honest about what that legacy means. She devoted much of her public life to causes fundamentally opposed to Catholic moral teaching, most notably the legalisation and promotion of abortion. She became a principal architect of Italy’s transformation from an overwhelmingly Catholic culture into a far more secular one. That makes Pope Francis’s repeated warmth towards her, including his extraordinary description of Bonino as one of Italy’s “forgotten greats”, all the more difficult to understand.
