Bishops who prayed over President Donald Trump in the Oval Office on October 22 are distancing themselves from the event, accusing the White House of exploiting their prayer for political purposes just twelve days before the midterm elections. Denver Archbishop James Golka, who led the prayer, denied endorsing Trump or the Republicans. He said the bishops had not authorized publication of the footage and expressed sadness that a sacred act had been manipulated. Milwaukee Archbishop Jeffrey Grob publicly apologized, saying he regretted ignoring his reservations. Des Moines Bishop William Joensen admitted he had been naive and accused others of partisan exploitation. The FSSPX’s Christ the King pilgrimage opened in Lourdes on October 24, despite Bishop Jean-Marc Micas’ ban on celebrations inside the sanctuary’s basilicas. Pilgrims gathered under a large tent at Maison Saint-Ignace for four Masses.
